Exodus chapter 2.
From the time Moses was born until the time he fled, God used all of those years of circumstances as a means to prepare Moses for what is to come. I'm sure Moses's mother was happy that Moses lived but probably sad that another woman got to raise him. But God used that as the means to carry out his upcoming plan. Sometimes our circumstances don't make sense. But we don't see the big picture that God sees. We may even ask why am I here? Why is this happening? So we have to trust God in all circumstances knowing that he is at work and equipping us for an upcoming purpose or plan.
I was impressed with the priest who told the daughters to bring the Egyptian, or who they thought was an Egyptian, to their house for dinner. This shows that this priest was the real deal with his faith. Because in worldly terms they should have abhorred the Egyptian knowing that they enslaved Israelites. But he showed love and compassion toward Moses.
Instead of trusting God, sometimes I’m tempted to take matters into my own hands just as I think Moses did in verse 12 when he struck down the Egyptian. He thought that he could hide what he did, but that wasn’t the case. Even if no other human knows about something that we have done, God still knows. When filled with fear, Moses ran away. God can help us conquer our fears with faith.
I was surprised in this chapter to learn Moses killed a man. It is difficult because the man was beating another person, and Moses probably felt justified in his actions to protect the Hebrew but we read, ‘he looked this way and that’ which makes me think he knew it was wrong. Often times before I sin or do something wrong, I do the same thing. Maybe if I’m engaging in gossip, I close the door to make sure no one will over hear. I need to remember God is all knowing. Just like Moses felt fear, I also have fear when I think some of my sins could come to surface. I don’t want to live in fear though and feel like I have to flee my own life! I hope to make more of an effort to avoid sin at all costs.
Moses chose the name Gershom or stranger for his son. It reminds me that we are strangers here – just passing through. Once we really get this concept, I think it is easier to not get caught up in material things. It makes it easier to take a whole lot of things less seriously and focus on what’s important.
