Abraham son, Isaac, had a set of twins with Rebekah his wife. While pregnant, God spoke to her and said that they would be separate, they would have two Nations, one would be stronger than the other, and the older would serve the younger. So when they were born it's funny how their names correlated with there looks or even personality. Esau was hairy so they named him Esau. Jacob, the younger one, had a hold of Esau heal when born. Jacob means grabs the heel or he deceives. Jacob comes across as a Deceiver looking out for himself. He deceives Esau into giving up his Birthright for a bowl of stew. Sibling rivalry definitely existed between the two.
It is interesting to see how God will use imperfect people to accomplish his purpose. He has a plan and purpose for each of Our Lives. We bring to him our imperfections and he uses us despite them while helping us to grow and develop more more into the image of Christ. God, I bring to you my whole life along with my imperfections and ask that you would use me to impact lives for you despite my imperfections

Janet, just in case you missed my yesterday response, I’ll do it again. It will be take about three years to get through the Bible by doing one chapter a day. I hope we all hang in there together because it’s so encouraging! It’s great to have you and all the others on board!
I can do this…..as long as my IPad keeps working. I’ll enjoy the journey.
I mentioned yesterday that during my prayer walk I felt God wanted me the challenge myself with each chapter read on how I could be a blessing to my wife. So that she knows she is number one in my life apart from God. So here’s my challenge to myself.
Esau’s name meant to deceive. I tell my wife I love her, and they tell us that actions speak louder than words. I want to make sure that my words are not deceptive. That my actions actually our representation of my love for my wife.
There have been problems in families all the way back since Adam and Eve had Cain and Abel, but we see in verse 22 of this chapter how Esau and Jacob were struggling together inside of Rebekah even before they were born! God answered Rebekah whenever she asked about it. These boys each had their own faults and it didn’t help that their parents each showed favoritism which caused even more problems later on. It seems silly to me that someone would trade their birthright for a bowl of stew, but that’s exactly what happened one day as Jacob schemed and Esau just didn’t seem to care. Esau appeared to be more interested in the temporary things of life that don’t last rather than thinking ahead for the future and valuing what would actually be more important. Isaac’s family had some big problems with love, honesty and respect. We are all imperfect people, but I pray that God would always help me and my family to honor Him and that we would not fall into any foolish trap of apathy, deceitfulness or hatred like we see with Isaac’s family.

Jim and Blair I love both of your takes on today’s reading of God using imperfect people and sibling rivalry. It helps to keep in perspective my times of imperfection where I feel shame and guilt over choices I’ve made in the past. God wants me to let those go because His purpose for my life is greater than the sin of my past. I myself have dealt with quite a bit of sibling squabbles in the past and only now in my adult life do I have a positive relationship with my sister. I see the same theme with Esau and Jacob as well as Isaac and Rebekah that happened in my childhood. Feelings of favoritism, deceit, jealousy. It is helpful to know we aren’t alone and that God understands when we go through difficult times as a family.
This verse hit me hardest,
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
As easy and harmless Esau thought it was to sell his birthright , he didn’t realize the consequences
Just think of all the people who can so easily sell there souls …. And not think of the consequences
Esau reminds me of today’s instant gratification society. What is wanted right now is more important than the consequences of the choice. He chose to feed his flesh but Jacob chose to feed the spirit. May we always choose to feed the spirit.
