Jeremiah Chapter 25. How many times do I have to tell you?

For 23 years Jeremiah has prophesied against Judah because of their sin but they have not listened. Because they have not turned from sin, God says he will arouse their enemies to attack them and overtake them. They will end up being under the control of Babylon for 70 years. But God also announces his punishment to Babylon and over 20 other nations because they too have rejected God's love and desire for faithfulness to him. When God calls his wrath upon a nation or a group of people because of their sin, it seems it would be easy to conclude God is not a very loving God. But the fact is he has had Jeremiah his prophet, along with other prophets, forewarning Judah for 23 years. This is a clear sign that God is so loving that he keeps warning the people over and over and over and over and over and over again. Why? Because he loves them and wishes that none perish. But to ignore God's warnings is to be foolish because to reject God and His loving warnings, is to face his wrath.

It's just like Christianity. God's motive for sending Jesus to die for us was love (John 3:16 “For God so loved the world…”). Jesus gives his body to take on our punishment for our sins. Jesus sheds his blood for the forgiveness of our sins. God's Word, the Bible, shows his love for us and how he doesn't wish that any perish but for all to turn from sin and receive Jesus (II Peter 3:9). In fact, he warns us over and over and over and over and over and over again through his Word that if we choose Christ we are forgiven and receive eternal life in heaven with God. But if we reject Christ then we bring God's wrath upon ourselves John 3:17, 18, 36. Because of sin we are already facing God's wrath.  To receive Jesus is to be forgiven and made righteous so we escape God's wrath. To reject Jesus is to receive the wrath God promises because our sins are not forgiven.

It's no different today than the days of Jeremiah. People are preached the good news of Jesus over and over and over and over and over again, but they reject it because they are doing “just fine” without him. But when God's wrath comes and they are separated from God forever, it will be their own fault. They will have no one to blame but themselves. They especially won't be able to blame our loving God who is full of grace and mercy. But we must choose to turn to Him.
