Proverbs Chapter 17. Why do I accept bribes?
Proverbs 17 verse 8 and verse 23 says this:
“A bribe is seen as a charm from those who give it.”
“The wicked accept bribes in secret to prevent the course of Justice.”
We can look at this with disgust for those giving the bribe and disgust for those who receive the bribe.
The person giving the bride acts as if it's a charm. A positive thing. But the results are evil and deadly.
The person receiving the bribe is looking at the pleasures of the bribe. “This is going to be great for me.” They don't think about the consequences of the bribe and how it will affect them or affect other people. They just look at the immediate gratification and not how it will affect one's soul.
To be honest, I think we are all guilty of receiving bribes and giving in to the pleasures of the Bribe.
Satan gives us bribes all the time:
1) The Bribe of a beautiful woman (or man) telling us she will be an encouragement to us on bad days. It's okay to look at her with lust. Which leads to thinking it's okay to flirt with her. It's okay to have lunch with her at work. It's okay to spend extra time with her… Etc.
2) Or the bribe of pornography. And how good it is for the pleasures of our eyes only to find out that it is destructive to our soul and our marriage.
3) Or the bribe of a certain job because of the money and all that you can do with it and how it will make you happy. But instead you work several hours and spend little or no time with your family. Or to make the money, you have to overlook some of the Injustice going on in the workplace or illegal dealings going on in the workplace.
4) or Satan's bribe to take the drink of alcohol because it will calm your nerves, or get your mind off of your job, or will be fun with your friends.
Satan's bribes are made to look good and to be pleasurable when in reality they bring destruction.
CHALLENGE: Make this prayer your true heart's desire. Lord, help me not to listen to the bribes of the devil so I stay on track with you. Empower me with your Holy Spirit so that I stand firm in my faith and so that I am faithful to You and Your Word. Amen
