Proverbs chapter 22. Don't be a PIG!
Verse 9 says, “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”
Acts 10:2 says, “Cornelius and his family were devout and God-fearing. He gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.”
I want to be known as a generous person. When I was young, if I was being selfish, my dad would say don't be a pig.
When I was in high school, I always brought an extra quarter to school to buy extra food at lunch. I had a growing appetite, lol. At least 80% of the time I'd pay the quarter for the extra potatoes, or extra goulash, or extra ham, etc. One day in line, the student in front of me was a quarter short of being able to buy his regular lunch. The lunch lady collecting the money told the student he was short $0.25. The student was silent and didn't know what to say. I remember making a sacrifice to buy my extra so I could give the student the $0.25 he needed. He was thankful and I felt good.
Am I a generous person today? Or am I a pig? Sometimes I think I'm a generous person but I also can think of times of being very selfish. I want to give generously to those in need, but also look out for my own interests to make sure I'm being taken care of. Philippians 2:3-4 says to be humble and consider others better than yourselves. It says don't just look out for your own interests but also the interests of others. I do have to make sure I'm being taken care of spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally. But I can't let myself become fixated on just myself. I have to become a servant like Jesus to those around me. I want to be seen as one who loves others and serves them through my generosity.
CHALLENGE:
Be generous today.
1) Humble yourselves.
2) Become a servant like Jesus.
3) Help someone in need.
My desire is to share a testimony tomorrow of how God used me to help someone in need.
Dear Lord, put someone in my path today that I can be generous to and even share Jesus with them verbally. Amen.
