Proverbs chapter 18. Stop – Listen – Evaluate.
Verse 2 says that a fool takes no pleasure in understanding and delights in airing their own opinions.
This comment about what fools do seem to be evident during our nation's unrest. A man from Turning Point set up a booth amongst the antifa and invited them to come and have a calm discussion of opposing ideas. This one antifa stated her ideas by yelling and screaming. When the turning point leader asked a question that challenged her thought process, she would respond with increased yelling, swearing and name-calling. The more he tried to share his ideas or ask questions, the more disrespectful she became until eventually she walked away while still yelling, swearing, and name-calling.
What a mess our nation is in. It's easy to see the turmoil and point fingers at the “guilty”. But in reality, I can't say, at times, I'm much different. At times, the difference between me and the antifa woman is I'm quieter. Much more quiet.
For example, if someone presents an idea that opposes my thought process, in my mind I quickly reject their idea. My hard heart is quick to reject what they said. I don't stop. I don't listen. And I don't process or evaluate what they're saying to determine if there's any value in what they are saying. It's not much different than the antifa woman. Granted, I'm not screaming and yelling obscenities but my heart is hard just like the antifa woman's heart was hard. In reality, I am a fool because I close my heart to that which could help me.
A wise person's heart is always open to finding wisdom and is willing to STOP and LISTEN to what a person has to say. Then EVALUATE it and determine if there's any value to the ideas worth keeping. The comments can be from a parent, a good friend, a spouse, a child, an enemy, God's Word, etc. Let us learn to STOP. LISTEN. And EVALUATE before we hold our ground and act as if we're “always right” and others are “always wrong.”
Have a BLESSED DAY!
