Nehemiah Chapter 8. Unity. Hunger. Hear. Obey.
It seems the longer we have something to enjoy the quicker we seem to take it for granted and eventually lose interest of it. That could apply to anything or anyone including our spouse. Yet, the longer we are without something the more we appreciate it when we finally have it. I remember being without water for a week. And when I walked into the church and saw a drinking fountain I had a new appreciation for the drinking fountain.
The people who came from exile and back to Judah were without God's Word for a long time and when they all joined together at Jerusalem they were:
1. United together as one.
2. They were hungry for God's word.
3. They wanted to both hear God's word and obey it.
1. UNITY: Psalm 133:1 says how good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity.
2. HUNGER: Psalm 42:1 says as the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you oh GOD.
Matthew 5:6 says blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.
3. HEAR and OBEY. LUKE 11:28 says blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.
I am constantly reminded that life is all about the Word of God. I can't talk about fellowship, relationships, love, meeting needs, problems, stresses, temptations, conflicts, joys of Life, etc. without the Word of God. It is our life and breath and everlasting life.
I had a youth once say, “I don't think life always has to be about the Word of God.”
I asked, “Why not? What else is there that could be more important?”
She said, “Oh, actually, I guess nothing!”
Lord, no matter what, help me to always have a hunger and thirst for unity, for your Word and your righteousness. Help me to never compromise the TRUTH! Amen.
